With its long, thin and blunt tip, it measures the depth of the pocket around the tooth in order to establish the state of health of the periodontium. The instrument has marks engraved on its head/tip for greater precision and legibility.

(AKA: Community Periodontal Index of Treatment Needs – CPITN Probe or WHO 621 Trintity)
(aka: CP11.5) The probe features a 0.5mm ball on it’s tip. It then has a black band from 3.5mm to 5.5mm and another black band from 8.5mm to 11.5mm. The first band is very useful when it comes to recording the patients Basic Periodontal Examination (BPE) score (PSR and CPITN periodontal screenings).
Probing implants must be done with care. A gentle probing force must be used so that the tip of the probe does not penetrate the junctional epithelium and connective tissue all the way to the bone. In healthy tissue, the probe will stop at the coronal level of the connective tissue. In the presence of inflammation, the probe tip may penetrate close to the bone.
